Well everybody please be seated calmly take your seats. And all we're getting ready to thought. This is marry me and. Give the invocation and I after the in vocation Please remain standing for the Star-Spangled Banner Dr and Anthony for Aereo is that the organ and Larry Ham neck of the New York State Teacher's Association will leave you in the Star-Spangled Banner this is remains deputy president of the city Teachers Association. Before all of this distinguished group of educators sit down to break bread together which would like to close down upon us the benediction of our. Way invoke his blessings to the cause of education for world responsibility in a world torn by strife we ask him to inspire us as we start the work of this convention director progress and perfect the finished. May I have your attention. We have an honored guest. Shortly I'd like to have your attention. We are also proud of the recent achievements of our true American astronauts Major James McDevitt and Edward White who circled the world for sixty two orbits and a major wide who walked out in space for twenty one minutes the first man ever to do so his first remold when he tumbled into space and saw the world beneath them in the stars above was this is fun at the same time both of them were engaged in scientific experiments in a most hazardous and historical achievement and by a broad comparison with out what our astronauts are any a convention is fun but at the same time we are engaged in a serious and far reaching considerations and concern education for world responsibility is a high sounding title but it means that we try to give our pupils a world view a world view to enable them to say that various communities of people around the world may have a different culture and language and a different way of looking at things that society at the past at action I want to pupil understands that world views differ and that he himself has won he is prepared to become in a good sense a citizen of his own world rather than be someone bound merely by inheritance to a certain Do we want them like the astronauts to have a world view the world sail has given thousands of our children an opportunity to view the culture and art of the many countries of the world the person responsible for this fantastic exposition is here. It would take several minutes merely to read the list of the many awards and medals and honorary degrees and armors for public service that have been conferred on Mr Robert Moses but it seems that today in this place which his was the inspiration and accomplishment that it is appropriate to use his title president of the world fail nine hundred sixty nine nine hundred sixty five despite his very busy day and numerous appointments he is good enough to be with us and say a few words he will like that assignment the president of the Worlds thing Mr Robert Moses. Will. The gadget actually work I'm not a professional reader and I'm sure you know the quick me of attempting to butter up an important and influential force in our national life the opinion of the nation's teachers means much to us or is your task to separate the wheat from the child the on toward incident from the grand march of progress the ephemeral from the permanent high to distinguish for you the true philosopher from the wisecracker who only solicitous a loud laugh and the anonymous snicker we are only welcome your. Leaders of you. Know the commencement is over and you have called on graduating classes the distilled wisdom of the curriculums man knows so little about himself and should not deny himself a little interest to learn. The Arisan is only ten miles away at it is only a half a billion years since the first man appeared over it I have a small role now and then as a commencement article telling a captive audience which deserves something better. But it stands where the brook and river meet at the beginning of a stormy voyage on troubled waters requiring all the skills of those in power on the sea I'm glad that you found the time to see your our own World's Fair some a university before you face another time I say how does the critics that we've gone solemn pile sakit that make an crassly commercial Well we're not running a circus Midway pizza bagel for factory we deny the soft impeachment of the guys and the gossipers of the reality show the bocher shills money changers wasps and scribblers we can afford to overlook the ill natured God that we were unable to bear that we were able to build bridges but not a fad it is indeed comparatively easy to build a bridge tunnel road but almost impossible to create a world's fair to meet every criteria of the penalties of trying out truly awesome this is a protean exposition. And all around Olympics of progress we're trying to operate a summer University of diverse courses I'm superior I have the time and call us corny but this is a family fad we accommodate a few inoffensive beavers beatniks Beatles and disco takes to leaven the lump we have a code which some local sophisticate still arrive. We have not denied an occasional spine chilling throw and belly laugh but we haven't turned a fair over to the shelves in the Baucus the main appeal is above the Adam's apple. Thanks fat We verily believe will justify the huge investments of exhibitors of all sorts and N.G.O.s devices of showmanship comedy and fun to popularize the most varied objectively it will in the end of stablish a reputation for New York as an international civic center not confirm its critics and they have prejudices we were on the famous face coolly of the age old choice between the applause of today on the verdict of history applause as measured in decibels history and terms of blood sweat and tears time will tell we have been fortunate they lacked an adequate represent representative hall of education here in Flushing Meadow but there is education here in the broad sense just as there is sometimes business competition and fun everywhere and a failed I do not need to stress in this gathering of educators but the fair is not merely a museum it presents the drama from the place to see and period to the atomic and Einstein age our act and seems include among other features the future of General Motors Ford trip which traces transportation and many other features from the bollards of the earth to the sophisticated vehicle of today in the cities of tomorrow the saga of the greatest man of all time Winston Churchill the roster of AA presidents. Space and Rocket exhibits discoveries inventions trade out of course religion are no not on the rise of the ambitious African Republic we call affair or some a university because it affords a chap's unique in a life time for young and old to obtain in a few days Aha a academic degree in world culture with all the privileges and immunities that go with it mission to the ranks of educated men you know or lympics every participant can walk off with a momento and every graduate the hood of a doctor a world progress we have something for the pedestrian the mother and child the rest of us teenager passive almost or don't follow what I don't follow those who love the landscape but have no gardens of their own to cultivate Stay with us a while come back to you who preach patience and fortune fortitude exercise them here don't try to cover all of ground in a day and having agonized for gap there is much here to see and savor on the latch kid latch string is out for you. Thank. You you have much less difficulty getting by that now are all spot on I did well thank you. Dr that I give you this. Medallion as president of the National Education Association and as you'll see it has the code of alms of the city on one side this is just the beginning of its fourth century founded in sixteen sixty four. You must share with you on a sphere which is the symbol of the fair on the other when you keep it on your desk and think of us now and then thank you. Thank you Mr Moses on behalf of these who are here this evening those who couldn't get in and they wanted to come and those yet to come to New York City for our convention I want to express our appreciation to you for your gracious reception of us here father your wonderful remarks of a few moments ago for this matter which I will certainly put on my desk and I'll put it right out there so all may see it during the convention it's a lovely thing and I want to tell you that you're going to have a lot of these people coming to the fair this week after hope they won't come business sessions are going on and if you found them out here during business sessions I hope you'll report them to me but other than that we want them to come and they've brought their families and we appreciate the fact that you have here fair that does have something for all the family thank you so very very much thank you. And when it. Comes. Down to say it's really something never. Done below is set and it has chosen the theme education responsibility she has dedicated her term of office to developing this theme we are all extremely grateful to her. And now it's a very great privilege for me to introduce to you a man whom we're very proud of and we're proud to know him he has just been appointed. Superintendent of New York City schools Bernard Donovan and. Dr Donovan will be an inspiring guide in the position he is well known for his ability in educational administration and he will do a great and a permanent good for education in the trouble of the world New York City Dr Donovan is a life member of an E.S.A. and those of you who attended the conventional eleven years ago in New York City well remember the fine pageant that was arranged under his leadership he welcomed them to the convention and he will give you a hearty welcome now Dr Bernard Donovan. Where is this Lions and sudden Journ offices and friends and the National Education Association is really a delight to bring you greetings tonight from the New York City school system I don't want to start by apologizing from membership I've got to do that for so many years it isn't even funny. But I am glad that this convention is back in New York City after being away from us about eleven years we have faced a lot of problems in New York City and the educational system I think you read about it in a paper now on then. And the problems that we're faced with are solved by professional people acting in concert as you do in these associations somebody asked me when I came in if I wore a patch over my eye tonight because of the collective bargaining with the United Federation of Teachers. And I told them No it's because I've been reading so many of those printed pamphlets from the N.E.A.. So that this city which we like to think of as. Boston will excuse me the hub of the universe is a city that is delighted to receive you were in that most unfortunate position at the moment of being both in school and out of school we were right till June thirtieth so the schools are in session as far as the teachers are concerned but as far as the pupils are concerned things ended quite some time ago and therefore our teachers I know find it difficult to get to all of your sessions we can't excuse everybody to go but I hope they attend as many as possible participate as much as they can Miss Mary Lyons who is acting as chairman here the same thing I know has tried to do the best she can for the city of New York and welcoming you in and helping her work out a very fine convention I appreciate her work in the work of the entire committee and may I just leave you with this thought please while you're in New York City and you're going to enjoy a week of conversation and I mean professional conversation. And while you're going to hear a number of very outstanding speakers on a great variety of topics and while you're going to attend Mr Moses wonderful fair here and by the way practically every school child in the city of New York has been here on school time. That's not why they came but it did help. And after a deuced admission that helped to why all of these things are happening would you do one thing for the schools of the city of New York would you just give thought and pause to the complexity of the problems to the earnestness of the over fifty thousand teachers and supervisors of this city in their desire to solve these problems professionally and to the support you can give both fraternally educationally and spiritually to the great teaching and supervisory staff of this city we feel that way up. Part of the nation even though sometimes the rest of the nation doesn't think so. But we are part of the nation and we welcome you and we're glad joy here and anything we can do to make you comfortable and contented and successful in your convention we would like to do I appreciate being invited tonight and having the opportunity to bring this greeting to you thank you.
