New Videos Warn Inmates of Rape

The New York State Department of Corrections is taking a new approach to preventing rape in prison. It will begin showing orientation videos — one for men and one for women — that tells inmates how to avoid being raped.

The videos, featuring first-hand accounts, offer practical advice like to be wary of those offering gifts, keeping your underwear on during showers, and what to say and do when your weightlifting partner invades your personal space. Eli Hager is a reporter with the Marshall Project, a nonprofit news organization dedicated to the criminal justice system. He got an exclusive look at the videos

"The videos are an attempt to break the code of silence around sexual violence and carve out an exception to the stigma against snitching," Hager told WNYC's Richard Hake.
