New York City Council Member from El Paso Shaken by Mass Shooting

New York City Councilman Carlos Menchaca

This weekend's mass shootings in Texas and Ohio have shaken people all over the U.S. but especially those who are from the cities where the attacks occurred.

New York City Councilman Carlos Menchaca was born and raised in El Paso, where authorities believe a gunman specifically targeted Latino immigrants. He also represents immigrant communities in Sunset Park and other parts of Brooklyn and chairs the Council's Immigration Committee.

"It hasn't been easy and it's not getting easier," Menchaca said of the mass shooting. His family members knew some of the victims.

"They're all traumatized. They're crying at work, holding each other," he said.

Menchaca spoke with WNYC's Jami Floyd. To hear the full conversation, click Listen.
