State lawmakers have approved legislation that makes electric bikes and scooters legal in most locations.
That means food delivery workers who rely on throttle bikes that can go up to 25 miles per hour will no longer face $500 fines and threats of confiscation.
The bill also legalizes e-scooters and allows for scooter-shares in every borough, except for Manhattan.
“This will also create opportunities for New Yorkers to commute in the coming months and years when people might be afraid of using public transport to commute and get around,” Marco Conner DiAquoi, deputy director of Transportation Alternatives, said.
The law requires anyone under 18 years of age to wear a helmet while on a motorized bike or scooter. The throttle bikes most delivery workers use also now requires a helmet.
