Newark, New Jersey public safety head reflects on two weeks of its youth curfew

Officials in Newark are bringing back a dormant curfew.

Starting May 3, the city mandated that people younger than 18 be accompanied by an adult if out after 11 p.m., with only a few exceptions. After curfew, kids and teenagers can be stopped by police, who will call in a trained social worker and try to contact their parents.

City officials have framed the curfew as part of a citywide Summer Safety Initiative, which also includes job training and other social programs.

Lakeesha Eure is Newark's Deputy Mayor for Public Safety. She leads the Summer Safety Initiative, and joined WNYC's Michael Hill to discuss what residents can expect this summer.
