Officials in Newark say their city's law enforcement and violence prevention strategies have transformed since 2016, when Newark police were put under federal monitoring. Homicides are at their lowest rate in 60 years. Shootings are down. And officials say they're making it all happen with fewer arrests.

Now, leaders in the city are unveiling their newest strategy for keeping this trend going. Newark's Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery last week unveiled its first strategic plan. They say it's about more than enforcement. It deals with healing and collaboration between community groups and law enforcement.

Sonia Rogers, a Newark resident who lost all three of her sons to gun violence, and Office director Lakeesha Eure joined WNYC's Michael Hill to discuss the plan's implications for the city.
