This Women's History Month, Newark, New Jersey, is honoring a hero of the Underground Railroad by unveiling a monument depicting her.
Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and returned to plantations to help others run to freedom. Part of the Underground Railroad ran through Newark.
Now, New Jersey's largest city is honoring Tubman and its legacy of Black liberation through the memorial, "Shadow of a Face." The Tubman memorial replaces a statue of Christopher Columbus the city took down amid the cries for racial justice in 2020.
Columbia University adjunct assistant professor and architect Nina Cooke John designed the Tubman monument. She joined WNYC's Michael Hill to talk about making history tangible for the community.
