New Jersey's eviction moratorium is ending under a new law signed by Gov. Phil Murphy. But some protections will stay in place.
Residents who missed payments, paid late or refused to pay a monthly increase can't be evicted. But for a judge to dismiss an eviction proceeding, tenants have to certify they couldn't pay their bills because of the pandemic, and that they applied for rental assistance. These protections extend through the end of the year for low-income families. For households earning more than 80% of their area median income, the safeguards expire this month.
While landlords won't be able to find relief in eviction court, they can sue tenants for owed money in civil court.
