A New Jersey man is being held without bail for allegedly planning to provide resources and fighters to the group that calls itself the Islamic State.
The U.S. Attorney in New Jersey said Samuel Rahamin Topaz, 21, from Fort Lee, was planning to travel to Syria to join the terror group.
“Providing fighters and resources to a terrorist organization like ISIL is a threat to our country and its citizens,” U.S. Attorney Fishman said. “We will continue to use all the tools at our disposal to disrupt the efforts of those who are trying to do harm at home and abroad.”
The FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force had been investigating four individuals from New York and New Jersey. One left the United States in May, allegedly to join the group, and another was arrested in Queens earlier this week. The fourth conspirator is a New Jersey resident, prosecutors say.
One of the conspirators allegedly sent a message to Topaz saying that he would be leaving overseas in a few days and asked Topaz if he did “what I [sic] advised you to do.”
Topaz responded, “I’m saving my money for it bro trust me I got it.”
Conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist organization carries a maximum of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
