N.J. Testing Backlog Down To 3 Days, As Officials Urge More Mass-Scale Tests

As recently as last week, some residents in New Jersey were waiting as long as 14 days for their test results. Now, state officials say they're starting to come back more quickly, with an average turnaround time of about three days.

Recent testing advancements will help to shorten that window even further. A saliva test developed by Rutgers University and deployed in the state earlier this week is spitting out results in two days. Quest Diagnostics says it's now using a test that can churn out results in three hours. And new rapid-test devices provided by Abbott Labs to New Jersey take just five to 13 minutes.

Officials are hopeful the advancements will help dramatically increase the state's testing capacity, which Governor Phil Murphy says will be necessary in order to safely restart the economy.
