NJ's Unemployment Claims Soar, Largely Among Service Industry Workers

More than 360,000 people in New Jersey have filed for unemployment in just the last two weeks, shattering records.

The record-setting number of claims last week and the week before are largely from about 40,000 workers in the food and restaurant industry who filed about 16 percent of all claims. Then came workers in medical offices at about 11 percent. Other hard hit areas included auto dealers, salons and hotels, all reeling from New Jersey's mass closures meant to stop the COVID-19 outbreak.

Alberto Magallenes, 44, worked at a Jersey City hotel and says it was incredible how suddenly things changed.

"The occupancy of the hotel just kept dropping and dropping and the events were canceling out or postponing it. But then boom next think you know, we're closed," he said.

The federal stimulus package extends unemployment benefits by 13 weeks and provides recipients with an additional $600 per week.
