This landmark program highlighted the contributions of different ethnic groups to American society as it focused on their struggles and ultimate achievements within a fledgling, pluralistic society. The WPA/Department of the Interior Office of Education series first aired on the CBS network in the fall and winter of 1938-1939. The programs were broadcast on WNYC in June 1939.

The awarded show, scripted by Gilbert Seldes with the assistance of Rachel Davis DuBois and other educators, was a huge success in 1939. Auditioned now, its omissions and flaws are apparent, yet it remains an important aural document of its time.
