New Yorkers got fearless girl, but now they’ll get real women.
New York City’s First Lady Chirlane McCray kicked off a campaign to add more monuments depicting historical women and the prominent events related to them.
“Where are all the women?” McCray asked, pointing out that the city has only five historically significant female statues compared to the 145 male statues, as reported by Gothamist.com.
However, there are many mythological representations like Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and fantasy characters like Alice from "Alice in Wonderland."
She Built NYC, the initiative under the Department of Cultural Affairs, is asking New Yorkers to nominate women that have been dead for twenty years or events that occurred twenty years ago or more. An advisory board comprised of mostly women will sift through nominations until the deadline August 1st.
The first nomination was given by Mia Emmanuel, a member of the Girl Scouts Leadership Institute, who nominated the original founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low.
