Protests against police violence and discriminatory policing have been underway in New York City for nearly one week.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD leadership have come under intense criticism for the looting and chaos that have erupted overnight against the backdrop of demonstrations that have seen repeated violent clashes between marchers and police.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was the latest to criticize city officials. Cuomo said neither the Mayor nor the NYPD did their jobs, and offered to send in the National Guard to help quell the unrest.
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson has also been critical of de Blasio's leadership during the protests. He told WNYC'S Jami Floyd he didn't think the newly-instituted 8 p.m. curfew would help the situation.
"There are some communities who feel like this is a way to stifle them," Johnson said.
