As NYC Immigrant Groups Decry Proposed Bail Reform Rollbacks, Some Chinese Community Groups Are Pushing Tougher Rules

Lawmakers in Albany say they are close to a deal that would tighten bail laws, allowing judges to hold more people in jail as they await trial. Advocates for many of New York City’s immigrant communities have said they oppose such a change, which they say would penalize people who could not afford to pay bail. But several Chinese community groups are taking the opposite stance. April Xu is a reporter for Documented, a nonprofit news site dedicated to covering New York’s immigrant communities.
