Commissioner Broderick introduces Mayor Wagner.

Mayor Wagner speaks of the hero police officers. "Their deeds of valor are a testimony to their dedication to the public welfare." It wasn't easy to select the men honored today. Police are our protectors. We have been calling for more police in a war against crime. Work of police is not without its cost in lives and injury to the police including being bitten by human beings. They and their families bear out pain and suffering. The doctrine of "police are the enemy" must be eliminated; he refers to incidents in the Bronx. Need to strengthen cooperation with minority communities. Police lab is one of the finest in the world. Training and more training. Officers sent to FBI Academy. We continue to explore all technical improvements: UHF receivers, Electro-writers for finding stolen cars, or fingerprint locators; but we need to test more technical help. Last year more than 200,000 arrested in NYC. Many with weapons. The city is grateful to these officers.
