Good evening ladies and gentlemen. This evening's Sam want to. Mark the start the. Ninth year salute the season's. Efforts to restore to write great city. A great and major of the natural beauty which it has which it was originally and with a long long time ago no trying to get it back in the same shape that it was our program this evening is rather special. And as you will very shortly discover very shortly quite unique however here to tell you about it in his own way is a master of ceremonies a distinguished member of the stage. New York has been my home for a few years and I have watched with all. Under the leadership of me of Wagner in. Fine country men are almost everywhere surrounded in their own country by less topical beauty. They know what natural beauty is we are doubly gratified and appreciative of the significance of your salute to why civic beautification program. D.D.R. as it is a truly meaningful salute and on behalf of all New Yorkers I ask you Mr Consul General to convey I want us thanks to your government and to your fellow countrymen why this evening's magnificent that attainment and also for this very gracious gift with which will I'm sure always be treasured by those in the reception room at City Hall who will follow me in the years to come again many many thanks. In that this country and in most parts of the WERE own wherever pans are worn. They are shared by the brine in Mexico. It is a symbol of sharing. When the wife not only words depends on the family but also. They had the big somebody. We have here for Mrs Welner is somebody you know will you step. Right up Mr Wagner. Thanks and passed up Patterson. Says Mary Lasker. And Rosen very often unfortunately could not be with us tonight we have a message from her and friends here. It isn't every day that the mayor of New York has flowers thrown at him and he that literally or figuratively and when I look with pride that. Many of the developments of the past twelve years. There are a few from which I've derived so much personal satisfaction as from my salute to the season's program. And the great but trop less like ours with some many differences and diversifications of interests those programs and projects which are important to one group are frequently disparaged by another. Unanimity on any issue is a red jewel which we official gem collectors are constantly searching. And rarely are we able to find it. Of this salute to season's program I believe it can truly be said that publican DOS Mint has been unanimous. From the very outset there has been only constant pressure for more trees more flowers and more greenery. The extent of our program has been limited only by budgetary considerations however from the very outset private support for City beautification has been highly gratifying it has come from everywhere from individuals like Mary Lasker and and the Rosenberg cough and Judge Della caught Doug Hurley and a host of others from business concerns from my great museums I giant retail establishment. The entertainment industry labor organizations business associations religious civic and philanthropic institutions. And most important of all it has come from you the citizens of New York City. Small school children have gone from house to house collecting pennies nickels and quarters to raise money for a tree on one of their blocks. I have no concern about the future of this program. In the words have President Johnson salute two seasons will establish a green legacy for tomorrow your whole hearted support for what we have been trying to do through this program guarantees that it will endure. As a private citizen who loves New York City I too will continue my efforts in behalf of this great program in fact I have some very concrete proposals which I directed at expanding the present program one I believe the time has come when our city must establish and enforce a strict design code for open air pocking and used car lots making it mandatory that they be properly and attractively screened through some form of landscaping decorative fencing too with the assistance of the federal government I hope that in the very busy near future the city might be able to obtain nearby land areas on which to operate its own nurseries staffed by young men trained in the and the poverty program and supervised by our own experts. I providing such an additional source of plant materials and trained personnel capable of carrying out the actual planting work. We will not only be training and employing hundreds of our young people but also hastening the progress of city beautification at a reduced expense and third I am going to suggest a completely new type of program to help stimulate neighborhood and block beautification groups by sharing some of the cost of the tree plantings with these groups through the creation of a so called Tree bank the city would put up a sum of seed money into this bank and the federal government private business foundations and private individuals would add to the deposits neighborhood groups could then draw from this tree bank an amount equal to whatever funds they themselves raised for planting trees provided that they can raise sufficient monies for at least five three years no one group could draw more than five thousand dollars in any one year. These are just three of the things I would like to see done in New York and now I would like to use this occasion to thank publicly the people who have contributed greatly to the success of our salute to season's program and at the top of the list of causes I do have friend Mary last standing right here thank you and Anna Rosenberg Hofmann who unfortunately was called away today but these two really initiated and inspired this program and have helped guide and direct it and in thanking them I hope I hope I can be considered to be thanking all who have worked. To make this already a program an all time success the volunteers and the officials and employees of the various city departments to each and every one of them from the top to the bottom of the list I don't want to name one without naming all and that would take some time but I would also like to say a particular word of thanks to the members of the Communications Media Lab helped make a salute to the seasons the success it was you have all served your city well. And now it has as been our custom on these occasions in the past I would like to acknowledge with a special citation one exceptional a generous gift from two distinguished New Yorkers Ican tribute to salute this season's help to make possible our salute to Mrs Lyndon B. Johnson earlier this year and lo Mr and Mrs I think the Lochie please come to the platform thank. You but I didn't present this on a citation to Mr and Mrs I think the Luci in recognition of their generous contribution to the spring salute ceremony upon the occasion of Mrs Lyndon B. Johnson is visit to our city in salute to Seasons program and I'm delighted to give this to you with a grateful appreciation I know of all of. You. Thank you. Thank you. And then play. Nosing let me assure you that I will always in what ever capacity I occupy. Have a green thumb to lend to the programs to make New York a more beautiful city and thank you again Mr Consul General for this delightful evening in honor of a wonderful program thank you. Thank this to me you have been so very generous in thanking as thanking the blood case thanking the people who have contributed to salute the seasons I feel however and I know I don't only speak for myself but for the million subs citizens of New York the visitors that come here that it is you who should be thinking it was your devotion it was your inspiration that is making you a clean and not beautiful city so may I say to you that I not only give my own personal pledge but I'm sure I'm speaking for Mrs Alaska for Mrs Hofmann for Ambassador Patterson and for the countless citizens have contributed that we were able to carry forward this wonderful project which would not have been possible without Thank you again thank you.
