NYC's Program to Curb Dangerous Driving Is Underway

New York City has a new program underway to crack down on reckless drivers.

In early November the Department of Transportation sent out 160 letters to drivers who've racked up five tickets for running red lights or fifteen tickets for speeding in school zones since October 2020.

Those drivers are now required to take a 90-minute course or risk losing their vehicle.

The course reviews how driving a few miles over the speed limit can be the difference between killing or injuring a pedestrian.

Participants also watch a video about how five families' lives were changed after a loved one was killed by a driver.

Research shows drivers who complete a program like this are 40 percent less likely to get a ticket again.

The city estimates more than 5,000 people qualify for this program.
