NYPD Reports 20 Percent Rise In Police Stops

New York City police officers recorded nearly 13,500 stops in 2019 — a more than 20 percent increase from the year before. About 90 percent of people stopped were black or Latino.

The NYPD has been under a federal monitor for its stop and frisk practices since a judge ruled in 2013 that police misused the tactic in a racially discriminatory and unlawful way. The monitor has flagged problems with under-reporting stops.

Police officials contend the increase in 2019 represents more accurate reporting.
