NY's top judge is set to resign. So what happens next?

New York's top judge shocked the legal community this week when she abruptly announced she would step down at the end of August.

Chief Judge Janet DiFiore had been in charge of the state's judicial branch since 2016, and she could have stayed on for another three years. Now, Governor Kathy Hochul will get to choose her replacement, and she's already facing pressure from progressive Democrats who see it as an opportunity to reshape the state's top court, the Court of Appeals.
