Obama Calls for Patience, But Fails to Offer Alternatives in ISIS Fight

U.S. President Barack Obama addresses the the terrorism threat to the United States and the recent attack in San Bernardino, California on December 6, 2015 in Washington, DC.

On Sunday night, President Obama made a speech from the Oval Office to address the country's fight against the Islamic State.

David Sanger, National Security Correspondent for The New York Times, offers his analysis. He says President Obama made the case that putting ground troops in Syria is not only politically untenable but also counterproductive to long-term success in the region.

However, Sanger says the weakness in Obama's speech was his failure to offer an alternative to boots on the ground. He says air strikes alone won't be enough to defeat ISIS, and Obama did not make a compelling argument for how the U.S. can convince Kurdish or Arab forces to get troops involved.
