On this episode of Concerts Plus, host Robert Sherman and guests explore works for odd instruments and instruments not typically associated with the chamber music genre in a program of live music and conversation. Martin Bookspan hosts the intermission feature.

You can usually count on Concerts Plus to give us something different, but this time...wow! I certainly never expected to have the opportunity of seeing and hearing a real, live arpeggione, let alone a functioning glass harmonica, yet tonight we have those and more. So, with great thanks to the virtuosi who have devoted themselves to the study and preservation of these all-but-obsolete instruments, we welcome them--and you--to what just has to be one of our most fascinating broadcasts ever.

Concerts Plus began as a recital series at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall on November 11th, 1982. Its Artistic Director, the cellist Simca Heled, organized each concert around a specific theme —love, the influence of jazz on classical music, works for guitar, etc.— and featured performances and conversation with renown performing artists. The hosts for the events included WQXR’s Robert Sherman and Live from Lincoln Center’s Martin Bookspan.

In 1986, after four sold-out seasons, Concerts Plus moved its home from Merkin Concert Hall to the WQXR Concert Theater. With this new partnership with WQXR, the first hour of each monthly Concerts Plus program was produced for radio and broadcast live on WQXR. Sherman became the show’s permanent host and Bookspan presented a weekly intermission feature quiz.

Guests on the series included violinist Chee-Yun, actor Werner Klemperer, the Orford String Quartet, composer-pianist-conductor Lukas Foss, pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, and clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera, to name just a few. The series debuted on WQXR on September 18th, 1986 and concluded its run on May 19th, 1988.
