Starting Monday subway and bus riders using the OMNY payment method who take 12 trips will be automatically upgraded to a weekly unlimited pass.
Commuters don’t need to do anything other than tap in using the new OMNY fare payment system. After 12 trips the rest of the week will be free until Sunday at midnight.
It’s called farecapping. And the MTA is hoping it will bolster ridership. There are about 2 million fewer riders now, than before the pandemic. This farecapping pilot will last 4 months.
The MTA says if its popular and profitable, it could continue or be expanded with other options like a monthly unlimited pass.
You can also still use your MetroCard, which won’t be phased out for another two years.
