A Look at the Syrian Refugee Crisis from the Shores of Greece

A Syrian refugee carries a child out of an inflatable boat on the shores of Lesbos island in Greece on August 23, 2015.

In 2016, more than 67,000 refugees and migrants arrived in Greece—almost 40 times the number in January 2015. In "Light on the Sea," filmmakers Micah Garen and Marie-Helene Carleton profile Neda Kadri a Syrian-American from Detroit, Michigan, who volunteers in Lesvos, Greece helping refugees disembark from the inflatable rafts that bring them from the Syrian coast. Their documentary premieres exclusively on Vanity Fair’s website
