When Elizabeth Keathley entered a DMV in Illinois in order to get a driver's permit and was asked if she'd like to register to vote, she had little idea her life was about to change dramatically.
"And I showed my passport because he asked me if I have any ID. And I said no, only passport and visa. So I give it to him, and he look it up. And he asked me, 'Do you wish to vote?' and I said yes."
Keathley, a Filipino immigrant, was not an American citizen, but proceeded to vote in a congressional election in 2006. This was in violation of the law, and initiated deportation proceedings. The real-life proceedings are the focus of a new stage production, The Courtroom, that will be performed at The Greene Space on Tuesday, February 19.
The cast of The Courtroom includes Broadway stars Kathleen Chalfant (Wit) and Ruthie Ann Miles (The King and I). Kristin Villanueva plays the role of Keathley.
Following the performance, WNYC's Arun Venugopal will lead a discussion with members of the cast and production.
