Police Blame Crime Spike on Bail Reform. Advocates Say Not So Fast.

New York City police leadership says they now have the numbers to back up their claim that the state's new bail reform law is leading to some safety issues. They say over the first two months of 2020, there's been a more than 30 percent increase in re-arrests when looking at felonies that were not eligible for bail under the new law.

But NYPD watchdogs say that in order for the NYPD to connect those numbers to bail reform, the police department needs to show that people re-committing crimes would have been behind bars before bail reform. Advocates also point out that increases in certain crimes, like robberies, were trending upward in the middle of last year, well before bail reform took effect January 1st.
