For fans of Pure Bathing Culture's debut album, Moon Tides, their newest single might be a bit of a shock. The group has often been compared to the atmospheric rock of the Cocteau Twins, but in their most recent track, "Pray For Rain," Pure Bathing Culture lets a cool, crisp breeze wake up their sleepy neo-psychedelia. It's a first glimpse at their sophomore album, also called Pray For Rain, which was produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, The Walkmen, Angel Olsen). The Grammy-winning producer pushed the group to a raw place in production - enforcing a no effects, processing or cliché rule. The results are poppy and uplifting even when talking about self-uncertainty. Sarah Versprille's vocals ring clear as she sings: "Are you cut in two, cut all the way through?" Daniel Hindman's scratch guitar maintains a level of their signature dreaminess but keeps a firm foot on the ground.
The duo say this album is about transitions and change in all regards, something not entirely new for them. Pure Bathing Culture began in the early 2000's at William Patterson University in New Jersey. Versprille and Hindman were fast friends their freshman year but didn't start creating music until a decade after their introduction. They started making music under the name Vetiver, but since 2013 they've been known as Pure Bathing Culture. Get a taste of their new sound as they perform a few songs unplugged off their forthcoming album, live in our studio.
