New York City is leading the state's growth in the tech industry, according to a new report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The state now ranks third among the nation's largest tech centers, behind California and Texas.
Mayor Bill de Blasio joined the comptroller at the women's healthcare clinic Maven on Friday to discuss the report.
"God bless the Silicon Valley, they'll always do great work, but more and more people understand that New York offers tremendous opportunity and is growing all the time," de Blasio said.
The comptroller's report found the tech sector accounted for more than 280,000 jobs in New York, with most of them — more than 80 percent — in New York City. DiNapoli said he expects the city to continue building on that success.
"It certainly, I think, is critical...for New York City to continue to put a priority on developing an educated work force so that the tech center can grown and draw on the talent right here in New York City," he said.
The report found the city's also making strides toward diversifying the tech workforce, too: a quarter of the city's tech employees are women.
