Weinberg W N Y C is critic at large in architecture and planning reporting on this week's upcoming hearing of the city planning commission this will be held on Wednesday November second at City Hall beginning as usual at ten A.M. and will start off with consideration of two urban renewal projects both of which are located in priority areas as called for by their Lindsey one of them to be known as Coney Island west would provide nine hundred forty four dwelling units on a site overlooking graves and Bay the other somewhat larger project is proposed to East Harlem along the river between one hundred seven hundred eleventh streets east of first time and you this is of a special interest since it is the area that had been the subject of a nationwide architectural competition Kentucky conducted by the river I company in which the prize winning design provided for an unusual type of layout of mixed high rise and low rise buildings with behavior traffic limited to short non through streets it is understood that if this project goes ahead the winning architect will be retained as a consultant for the actual design following the hearings on these urban renewal projects for which the planning commissions approval must be obtained with respect to their relation and location to other city wide facilities and conditions the commission will hear arguments for or against a number of map changes changes in the zoning districts and modifications to the zoning law itself.
