Returning to Vietnam 50 Years Later in 'A Rumor of War'

Hovering U.S. Army helicopters pour machine gun fire into tree line to cover the advance of Vietnamese ground troops in an attack on a Viet Cong camp 18 miles north of Tay Ninh on March 29, 1965.

Philip Caputo talks about his landmark Vietnam War memoir A Rumor of War. He discusses the 16 months he spent as a Marine lieutenant who served with the first ground combat unit deployed to Vietnam in 1965 and details his life after he returned home -- psychologically and emotionally destroyed. He also appears in Ken Burns's new 10-part, 18-hour PBS series "The Vietnam War," which premieres on September 17.
