October 2015 Schedule Changes for WNYC and NJPR

We’re pleased to introduce two new programs to WNYC’s broadcast schedule beginning October 24  – The New Yorker Radio Hour and Freakonomics Radio.

WNYC is partnering with The New Yorker magazine to produce a new weekly radio program.  The New Yorker Radio Hour will present, in the words of The New Yorker’s editor David Remnick, “intimate conversations, stories about incredible characters and a blast of humor,” with work by the same creative team that publishes the magazine in collaboration with WNYC.

Many WNYC listeners are already familiar with the Freakonomics Radio podcast, which has over five million downloads per month!  Now we are happy to bring a full hour of Freakonomics Radio to WNYC Radio as a weekly program featuring Stephen Dubner’s  unique look at the “hidden side of everything.”

We also made the difficult decision to stop airing The Best of Car Talk. We know this will be disappointing news for many listeners.  Car Talk has been an institution on public radio, and here in New York on WNYC, for as long as many of us can remember.  Tom and Ray Magliozzi took a show about car repair to a level of entertainment few would have considered possible – good advice on cars, yes, but also unexpected advice on relationships mixed with a heavy dose of contagious laughter.

Changes to Car Talk started in 2012, when Tom and Ray announced their retirement, ending production of new episodes.  The show continued on the radio using material from the program’s archives.  Then, last year, came the very sad news that Tom Magliozzi died, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.   With Tom’s death and the show in repeats, the time feels right to look forward and introduce new programming to WNYC’s schedule.  You can continue to hear the show by subscribing to the podcast or use the WNYC App to listen to Car Talk on-demand.
