Show Highlights Next Generation of Artists

"David," by Yunsung Jang. The skin of his portraits appears lifelike

Portraits of albino horses and faces with textured skin hang in the gallery of the New York Academy of Art.

The school’s “2014 Fellows” exhibition displays the work of artists Elizabeth Glaessner, Nicholas Sanchez and Yunsung Jang. All three artists were selected for the school’s three-year fellowship.

Peter Drake, the dean of academic affairs for the school, said selected students are given a stipend and the chance to teach and create art for a year — and hopefully make necessary connections to further their careers.

“We select the three most promising artists,” Drake said. “But they also have to be artists that we think are going to be participants in the art world, and also share their knowledge with the students below them.”

Fellow Yunsung Jang's portrait “Mother #1” just won the Visitors’ Choice award at the National Portrait Gallery in London. And he said he is concerned about preserving his artistry from himself. "I'm really, really afraid my ego become higher than my ability, higher than my potential," he said.

The “2014 Fellows” exhibit is on display daily at the New York Academy of Art in Tribeca. The exhibit is free and will be open through September 28.
