Speech on Unions, Employment, and the Motion Picture "The True Glory"
La Guardia stresses the importance of binding agreements for the good of both labor and employers. He notes that labor leaders disavow strikes, slowdowns, and other measures as evidence that those practices are not good labor practices. Labor leaders' job requires them to carry out these binding agreements.
He argues that labor practices should be democratic in form - with open elections and accountability. He bemoans extortive labor practices.
He argues that there should be one labor union for all workers - a union of AFL and CIO - in the interest of workers everywhere. His goal in recommending this is employment for all - "employment on an annual basis" - rather than "artificially maintained jobs for a few local officials."
He ends on a patriotic note, praising the film "The True Glory," made by the governments of the United States and Great Britain.
