NJ Senator Backs $32B Transit Funding

New Jersey Senator Bob Menedez is leading the call for another round of federal relief funds for transit agencies. If the money doesn't come through, the agencies say service could be cut.

The MTA has already spent more than half of it’s last round of stimulus funding—that is nearly $4 billion. It’s asking for another $4 billion. It argues the city generates 10 percent of the country’s economic output, and without funding, service might be cut, and job losses will follow.

NJ transit for its part is asking for $1.2 billion and the Port Authority $3 billion.

All agencies have lost revenue because ridership declined during the pandemic, while costs increased from cleaning and sanitizing. The senate is expected to take up the question when it considers the next round of stimulus funding later this month.
