Seeing More Homeless? It's Not an Illusion.

The number of homeless people living on the city’s streets has gone up by 40 percent compared to last year, according to the latest federally-mandated survey.

The number of homeless New Yorkers living on the streets increased to 3,892, up from 2,794 last year. The de Blasio administration said the numbers are higher this year due to the continuing shortage of affordable housing and because the survey was conducted on a particularly warm day in February, when more people stayed outside.

While the number of people living inside city shelters has been steadily increasing, this is the first time since 2014 street homelessness has also increased. City officials say they’ve doubled the number of street outreach workers to help people get off the streets.

“While we know we have a lot more work to do," Mayor de Blasio said, "we are continuing to open more street homeless facilities and provide more programs for New Yorkers we are helping transition from the street to permanent housing.”
