Struggling Taxi Drivers Call for Help

A group representing taxi drivers is calling on the city and state to step in and provide immediate assistance.

The Taxi Worker’s Alliance, which represents yellow, black, green and ride hailing app drivers says its members are on the front lines, but have no safety net. It’s calling on the city to expand sick leave policy to drivers who are still considered contractors, urging lenders to suspend debt collection, and asking the Albany to hit pause on the congestion pricing fee. Medallion owner and driver Augustine Tang is choosing not to drive now, just to be safe.

“I don’t have the heart to even go out there, and I don’t know if I have the virus, but if I could transmit and not show any symptoms I just cannot do that,” he told WNYC.

Tang owes half a million dollars in medallion debt he inherited. He’s also told his night driver, who's 62 years old, to lay low for the time being.
