Transportation advocates called on frustrated subway riders Monday to become activists by tweeting their frustrations with the system directly to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
"Take that and pull it out the next time you get delayed," said Riders' Alliance member Barbara Hochberg to a rider at Grand Central after handing him a flyer that included Cuomo's Twitter handle. "Pull it out and say, 'Oh wow, now I'm going to tweet the governor.'"
On-time subway performance fell from 81 percent in 2013 to 63 percent in the first eight months of 2017, according to MTA records.
The head of the MTA is appointed by Cuomo.
"We fully recognize that the subway is in unacceptable disrepair and is functioning with flawed performance," said Cuomo press secretary Dani Lever in a statement. She said that's why the New York declared the MTA was in a 'State of Emergency' in June and committed to funding half of an action plan to perform much needed maintenance work in July.
