Surprises, Serena and Summer Heat at the 2018 U.S. Open

Serena Williams returns a shot to Kaia Kanepi, of Estonia, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018, in New York.

Tennis fans from around the world are flocking to Queens for the 8th Day of the U.S. Open, where a narrowing pool of competitors are battling for trophies and titles.

Veteran athletes are fairing well so far this year. On the women's side, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova have both made it through unscathed. For the men, Roger Federer, Novak Djovokic, and Rafael Nadal are beating out the competition.

But younger athletes are also winning sets and turning heads. 20-year-old Aryna Sabalenka took out the fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova over the weekend, and 25-year-old Sloan Stephens easily toppled Elise Mertens on Sunday.

Racquet Magazine founder Caitlin Thompson talks to WNYC's Kerry Nolan about the tournament's headlines.
