The New York City Council is once again taking up a bill that would force the police to provide more information about surveillance technology the department uses around the city.
First introduced in 2017, the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology Act would require the NYPD be more transparent about the tools it uses for intelligence gathering. The bill's supporters say it would shed light on some of the NYPD's most controversial tools. But police officials say it would diminish their ability to monitor terrorists and put officers' lives at risk. Tensions were on full display during a Public Safety Committee hearing on Wednesday.
More than a dozen U.S. cities now have laws requiring a public process for police departments' purchase and use of surveillance tools.
