Taxi Drivers Outside City Hall Have Been On a Hunger Strike for a Week

Yellow cab drivers have been protesting outside City Hall for over a month now. They want the city to do more to reduce debt for medallion owners. Now, some have gone on a hunger strike.

Many drivers took out loans when taxi medallions were worth nearly a million dollars. Now, the medallion market has collapsed — and many drivers can’t make monthly payments.

They want the city to be the guarantor on the loans, giving lenders an incentive to reduce the debt more. But Mayor de Blasio says the city's program, which offers lenders $20,000 toward reducing each loan, has already helped more than 150 drivers.
