It’s been more than a week since the state set a deadline for MTA workers to either get vaccinated or be tested weekly for COVID-19. But the agency appears to be having a hard time complying with the requirement.
Currently, only 68% of MTA workers have received at least one vaccine, as opposed to 85% of New Yorkers over 18. And the agency doesn't appear to be checking on COVID test results.
One unvaccinated worker told WNYC that while she does get tested weekly on her own, no one at the MTA has asked for proof.
In a statement, the MTA says workers are subject to an audit, and if they don’t have the vaccine or test results a supervisor will follow up with them. The MTA didn't elaborate on what the punishment might be, or how frequently it's checking workers' status, but said it's focusing on getting as many workers vaccinated as possible.
