Three Narratives About Incarceration

"Jack &"

Anna Sale, host and managing editor of Death, Sex & Money, joins us to discuss the show’s latest episode titled, “I Served 27 Years In Prison. Now, I'm Out On Parole.” She’s joined by the subject of the episode, Lawrence Bartley, who Sale spoke with before, first in 2014, and then again last summer, when he was getting ready to go before the parole board for the first time. This past May, Lawrence was paroled, and walked out of Sing Sing a free man. After a few months out, he and his wife, Ronnine, joined Sale to talk about their life as a family on the outside. Bartley co-curated an art exhibit titled Capitalizing on Justice for the Corrections Accountability Project at the Urban Justice Center. It opens October 11 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at 40 Rector St., 9th floor.

Filmmaker Rudy Valdez joins us to discuss his documentary, “The Sentence.” The film’s subject, Cindy Shank, will also join Valdez. Drawing from hundreds of hours of footage, Valdez shows the aftermath of his sister Cindy’s 15-year sentence for conspiracy charges related to crimes committed by her deceased ex-boyfriend—something known, in legal terms, as “the girlfriend problem.” Valdez documents how he and his family begin to fight for Cindy’s release during the last months of the Obama administration’s clemency initiative. The film will make its theatrical premiere at Metrograph on October 12 and will air on HBO on October 15.

Theater artist Kaneza Schaal and actor Cornell Alston join us to discuss their new production “Jack &,” which considers how people re-enter into society after prison. The production will play at BAM as part of the 2018 Next Wave Festival from October 17 through October 20.
