Every Wednesday evening at Moore Homestead Playground in Elmhurst, Queens, generations of the city’s Tibetan community converge for a weekly circle dance known as Gorshey. They aren’t alone – the same thing takes place in Paris, Toronto, New Delhi and other centers of the Tibetan diaspora. And while it might look like mere fun to casual observers, community members say what they’re doing is actively engaging in resistance in the face of cultural erasure – part of an ongoing campaign that combines mass gatherings with digital platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
