Top Jersey City Officials Accidentally Recorded Themselves Allegedly Trying to Rig Bids

The allegations come amid Mayor Steve Fulop's re-election campaign

An ongoing lawsuit over an alleged hostile work environment in Jersey City's mayor's office took a turn when two top officials were accused of trying to rig bids before the city and accidentally recording themselves discussing it.

Politico reports that depositions taken a month ago allege that Mayor Steve Fulop's former Chief of Staff Muhammed Akil and former Jersey City Democratic Organization chairman Sean “Sully” Thomas were caught on tape talking about how to steer a committee towards accepting a particular contractor's bid. Fulop has since said that his office canceled the bid when it learned about the recording, but Politico reporter Matthew Friedman says there are still plenty of questions.

"If people heard this recording and it was concerning enough that Mayor Fulop determined that that was the wisest course of action, why did he determine that the people who allegedly tainted this process should remain in these prominent positions?"
