Tradition Returns to Broadway

Danny Burstein and Adam Dannheisser with the cast perform during the 'Fiddler On The Roof' Media Day at the New 42nd Street Studios on October 15, 2015 in New York City.

The fifth Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof will begin previews on November 20th at the Broadway Theatre. Fiddler is one of the most-produced musicals in theatre history, with productions in Spanish, Hebrew, German, Japanese, and more. The story connects with viewers across the globe due to its relatable characters and themes of family ties and tradition. It was first seen by audiences in 1964, breaking a record of more than 3,000 performances on Broadway. Fiddler was written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick with a book by Joseph Stein. This new production will be directed by Bartlett Sher (The King and I) and choreographed by Israeli Hofesh Shechter based on the famous original Jerome Robbins dances.

This musical adaptation of a series of stories by Yiddish author Sholem Aleichem takes place in 1905 Russia, in a small Jewish town called Anatevka. It has a large cast of characters, but centrally focuses on Tevye, a milkman originally played by Zero Mostel. Tevye struggles with upholding tradition in his family as his daughters choose to marry for love. In the meantime, Anatevka at large deals with incoming Russian governmental forces who threaten their ways of life and livelihoods.

Tevye is played by Danny Burstein (Cabaret), who has performed in the show multiple times in regional theatre. The ensemble cast includes Jessica Hecht (The Assembled Parties) as his wife Golde, Adam Kantor (Next to Normal) as future son in law Motel, and Alix Korey (All Shook Up) as matchmaker Yente. Rounding out the cast are Tevye’s eldest daughters – Alexandra Silber (Master Class) as Tzeitel, Samantha Massell (Papermill’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame) as Hodel, and Melanie Moore (Finding Neverland) as Chava.
