Inside the Vans that Traffic Prisoners Across State Lines

The first is of Michael Dykes, who has diabetes, and had his legs amputated after spending three days in an Inmate Services Corporation van, traveling from South Carolina to Missouri, in July 2012

A Marshall Project investigation found that every year, thousands of fugitives and suspects, many of whom have not been convicted, are extradited across state lines by several small, for-profit, private companies that specialize in prisoner transport with little to no oversight.

Reporters Eli Hager and Alysia Santo reviewed of thousands of court documents, federal records and local news articles and interviews, and uncovered systemic corruption and abuse of the prisoners. They will discuss their recent New York Times cover story, "Inside the Deadly World of Private Prisoner Transport" which was reported by The Marshall Project in partnership with The New York Times. Roberta Blake, who is featured in the piece and spent two weeks in 2014 being transported from California to Alabama, joins the discussion.
