Upper East Side Parents Ask for More Pre-K Seats

Parents rallied on the Upper East Side to demand more pre-K seats in their neighborhood.

Elected officials and parents rallied on the Upper East Side Sunday to ask the city to provide more prekindergarten seats.

Councilman Ben Kallos, who represents the area, said around 900 four-year-olds applied for 600 available seats, leaving about a third of the families with an offer for a seat in another neighborhood.

While those schools might be in the same school district (the city's school district 2 stretches from the Upper East Side to the bottom of Manhattan), Kallos said too many parents will have to make long commutes to get there.

“We’re told there’s pre-K for all, but there’s no way for us to get our child, with two working parents, 45 minutes downtown when I work on 120th Street,” said Irina Goldman, whose daughter Sophia was offered a spot in a program in the Financial District. “That would be adding two hours each way to my commute.”

A spokesman for the Department of Education said the city quadrupled the number of pre-K seats on the Upper East Side and that they’re working on securing more seats for coming school years.
