This Week in Politics: Budgeting During a Pandemic

January 21, 2020- Albany, NY- Governor Andrew M. Cuomo presents his fiscal year 2021Executive Budget in Albany

Ready or not, New York's budget is due on Wednesday, April 1st, even as the state is working to halt the spread of the coronavirus. New York State Public Radio's Capitol Bureau Chief Karen DeWitt spoke with WNYC's David Furst about the looming budget deadline.

"The coronavirus has upended the budget completely. We were starting off the year with a $6 billion deficit," DeWitt said. "The deficit is now $15 billion and growing. 17% of New York State's revenues come from Wall Street and we all know what's happening there. So all the spending estimates now are in very serious doubt."
