This Week in Politics: New York Budget Season - Just as Confrontational as Ever

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo delivers his State of the State address and executive budget proposal at the Hart Theatre, Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, in Albany, N.Y.

With just over two weeks to go before the April 1 budget deadline, negotiations between Governor Andrew Cuomo and lawmakers in Albany are heating up. Even though New York is controlled by one party now - the Democrats - that has not taken the edge off the annual budget battle.

Karen DeWitt, capitol bureau chief for New York State Public Radio and WNYC statehouse reporter, Fred Mogul, join us to discuss what the tensions are all about and what issues are on the table.

Speaking with David Furst, Dewitt said: "Now that they're getting to some more complicated measures, for instance the criminal justice reform, we're seeing push back from DAs, suburban lawmakers, especially in the Senate, who could be very vulnerable to re-election challenges, are getting nervous. And that's the big question: can they all work it out?"
