
Parsing Through the Research That Links The Pill to Breast Cancer

Around 10 million women in the U.S. use oral contraceptives every day, and doctors have been confidently prescribing the pill to women of childbearing age for decades.
Now new research says there may be an increased risk of breast cancer for those using hormonal birth control like the pill or certain IUDs. The Danish study released this week looked at 1.8 million women over more than a decade.
But many doctors and experts are urging patients to keep this study in perspective. Dr. Nancy Stanwood, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Yale School of Medicine, and section chief of family planning, explains why she thinks women should not be alarmed by the study, and says the pill remains a safe choice.
